My query contains terms like additive or acidic which is leading to a fair number of references that have nothing to do with the field I am searching.

For stricter matching of your terms, you need to turn off stemming which is on by default.  You can find the stemming option under the Query tools filter.  Also, please make sure that the quotation marks of your terms were straight and not curved / curly in the search.
